The UK's top 10 horror movies have been revealed

In anticipation of Halloween the UK's top 10 horror movies have been revealed and it's pretty scary stuff!

The oldest on the list is the 1960s film Psycho, with the most recent film, 2013's The Evil Dead. It seems that nothing from the last four years has scared us enough.

The survey conducted by mobile phone insurance provider Insurance2go has found that horror series such as Alien and 28 Days Later have clearly made an impression on the general public, as they have been rated at six and seven respectively in the top 10, but it is the classic horror films such as The Shining, Psycho and The Exorcist which find themselves higher in the chart.

10. The Omen (1976)

This was remade in 2006, but it is the 1976 original that makes us most scared!

9. What Lies Beneath (2000)

This supernatural psychological horror starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer scared movie-goers in 17 years ago.

8. The Evil Dead (2013)

Originally made in 1981 The Evil Dead was remade in 2013 for a new generation.

7. 28 Days Later Series (2002 onwards)

This British post-apocalyptic horror film was directed by Danny Boyle.

6. Alien Series (1979 onwards)

There have been many Alien films from 1979 up until the present day, combined they make it as number six in this chart.

5. Poltergeist (1982)

Poltergeist was remade just two years ago, but it was the 1982 original which has been chosen as number five on this chart.

4. The Exorcist (1973)

Released in 1973 this film was also shown again in cinemas in the late 90s and still scared us.

3. Paranormal Activity (2007)

The first of the Paranormal Activity films is the scariest of the series.

2. Psycho (1960)

It it is the oldest film in this countdown, but nearly 60 years later it is still one of the horror classics.

1. The Shining (1980)

'Here's Johnny!' is the iconic line from this horror film which scared film goers in 1980.

When looking at which film genre scares us most it was the paranormal category that came first, with a quarter of us making it our favourite type of horror. Over a fifth of the nation also love a psychological thriller, making The Shining’s Jack Nicholson the scariest psycho character.
