Matthew and Charley, who share two children together, also both star in the ITV soap as David Metcalfe and Debbie Dingle - and Matthew today revealed that their characters would NEVER be in a romantic storyline together.

Speaking on This Morning earlier today, 38-year-old Matthew revealed that show bosses at ITV had once suggested that his and Charley's characters should have a romantic relationship, and that they had actually requested for their characters to not cross romantic paths.

Matthew said, "They once suggested that they were going to put our characters together and we thought this would be dreadful, the thought of getting up and doing scenes together.

"So we said, 'No, please don't put us together!' It's nice to go off with our Emmerdale families and then come back to each other."

Matthew and 30-year-old Charley, who share eight-year-old Buster and two-year-old Bowie, told OK! magazine that their shock wedding was incredible, with Charley revealing at the time, "That moment when we announced what we were doing and seeing everybody’s reaction is the best moment of my life."

Matthew added, "We couldn’t have had a better response. People just screamed for about ten minutes!"

Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV at 7pm.
