A Worcester bike group says it's important everyone feels safe when on the streets and roads in the area.

Bike Worcester are taking part in the ‘Safe Streets Now’ initiative today, calling for safer pedestrian and cycle routes to all primary and secondary schools.

Al Pagan is a volunteer at the group and has organised the support event.

"This all came about really because of an increase in road danger," Al said.

"There's all sorts of things like speeding cars, and other things that are making it a challenge to get around safely.

"Pedestrians who can't necessarily cross roads where they should be able to and end up having to find a crossing that's so much further away from where they need to go, it all could just be easier."

West Mercia Police say they are supporting the national 'Fatal Four' operation through April, while continuing to work proactively on their ongoing commitment to making roads safer.

Safe Streets Now is aimed at minimizing road dangers, and Al says just simple changes can make a real difference.

"What we're suggesting as a group is something called school streets," Al said.

"This would allow residents in and out of that road, but it stops all of the traffic from coming through to that school.

"Therefore, the kids have a free space to be able to cross the road with their parents and it gives the community back their space, while also allowing for a dramatic reduction in that kind of road danger."

Bike Worcester say they will support the event with a Critical Mass bike ride.
