Birmingham Airport security scare 'concluded safely', says police

West Midlands Police were called to Birmingham Airport yesterday evening (16 April) after a suspect package was reported on an Aer Lingus flight bound for Belfast.

Officers have now said it's business as usual after it was confirmed the package was not a security risk.

Planes were grounded and the Aer Lingus flight, which had already taken off, was safely re-routed back to Birmingham Airport.

Passengers and crew disembarked before it was searched by specialist officers.

Flights resumed when it was confirmed there was no security risk.

West Midlands Police said in a statement on their website: "The incident is now being dealt as a false call with very good intent and the item is not suspicious.

The safety of all was our primary concern and there is no wider risk to the public and the airport re-opened at 6pm.

We would like to thank the public for their patience and support while we dealt with this incident."
