A man has appeared in court today accused of murdering his mum in Portishead.

Yesterday evening, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed 39-year-old Gavin Nash, of Tansy Lane, had been charged in connection with the incident on Tuesday.

Today (June 30), he appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court - and has now been remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance at Bristol Crown Court on July 3.

At around midday on Tuesday (June 27), a woman was found with serious injuries on Tansy Lane, but she was later confirmed dead at the scene.

She was later confirmed to be 64-year-old Lynette Nash, who died at her home in the North Somerset town.

During the brief hearing at court today, the court heard Nash is also accused on the same day of assaulting police officer Daniel Larkin while in custody at Patchway police centre.

It is said Nash kicked the officer in the leg.

The defendant was then remanded into custody.

Presiding justice Stefano Patacchiola said told the defendant: "Mr Nash, you are being sent to Bristol Crown Court for a hearing on Monday which will be held in your absence.

"You will be remanded into custody."

Detective Inspector Neil Meade, the senior investigating officer, said: "Lynette's family continue to be offered support by our specialist family liaison officers.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the family as they come to terms with what has happened.

"We would like to thank the local community again for their patience and understanding while we carried out our investigation."

A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because of what the Avon and Somerset force have described as 'prior police contact'.
