An 11 year old boy has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being knocked off his bike in a collision involving a tram in Nottingham.

Emergency services were called to Wilkinson Street at around 8 o'clock this morning.

The tram's operator says services were temporarily stopped between the City centre and David street but are now back underway.

An investigation has been launched to establish exactly what happened.

Trevor Stocker, NET Head of Operations, said: “We can confirm that around 8.00am this morning, tram services were temporarily interrupted between the city centre and David Lane following a collision between a member of the public and a tram at the Wilkinson Street stop.

“Emergency services were called to the scene, and a young male cyclist was later taken to hospital for treatment.

“An investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances leading up to the incident, but we would like to thank all the emergency services involved for their swift and professional response.”

Chief Inspector David Mather, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Emergency services were called to Wilkinson Street, Nottingham, around 8.05am today (4 March) following reports of a road traffic collision.

“One casualty has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“The road was closed for a short period while we worked with colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service but has now reopened.

“We would like to thank motorists and tram users for their patience and understanding.”

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue said: "We received a call on Monday 4 March at 8.06am to Wilkinson Street in Basford.

"Fire crews from Stockhill and Nottingham Road (Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service) attended the incident.

"An 11-year-old boy was trapped under a tram after falling off a bike. Firefighters used spreaders to release the casualty. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance."
