Over £350,000 in mental health funding for people experiencing homelessness in East Yorkshire
Hull and East Yorkshire Mind have received the money from the National Lottery.
Mental health support for people experiencing homelessness in East Yorkshire will see a boost after Hull and East Yorkshire Mind received £361,000 in National Lottery funding.
The money will mean that everyone who is experiencing homelessness and access support at Mind's community hub in Bridlington can receive 20 sessions of counselling, and staff will go out to find those who need support.
Melanie Roberts considered ending her own life after being kicked out of home by her abusive husband and forced to live on the streets. Unable to read and write, Melanie said Mind have helped her improve her mental health and access vital services.
Melanie said: "I was in a bad state, I was terrible, I didn't know where I was going, I had no money, no clothes, no life to live for. They helped me a lot.
"Without Mind I'd probably be dead. I wouldn't be where I am, I'd have no help, but they've been here for me and they've been great."
Melanie has now accessed temporary housing and is living in Bridlington, supported by the staff at Mind.
Jack Moore works for the charity and said: "When people are well they're more inclined to make positive decisions, whether that be to do with housing, health or employment, so we just want to work with them to give them the most appropriate support.
"The money is going to enable us to stay open for over three years, support the most vulnerable in our community and give them a bit of hope."
Melanie said: "I'm doing things for myself, I'm more confident to get out there, push myself and if I need help I come and ask for it."
