Liam Payne could be hinting that One Direction are getting back together. At least, that's what fans are questioning after Cheryl's ex-boyfriend posted a snap of the band in a cryptic Instagram post.

Uploading a photo of himself, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Harry Styles from the beginning of their incredible journey as One Direction, Liam Payne simply captioned the snap, '1000 days'.

Fans were sent into a frenzy after the post, questioning if it marked the day the band would reunite. Comments poured in, with one fan writing, 'MY HEART JUST STOPPED BEATING,' as another added, 'I'M ALMOST IN TEARS RN PLEASE COME BACK,' and one follower simply wrote, 'Are you going to get back together?'

The excitement comes after fans were disappointed to discover that One Direction's merchandise shop was closed down this week.

The online store closed down on the band's website, leading to suspicions that their so-called 'hiatus' really meant the end of the band for good, and fans were not happy.

A Twitter user wrote, 'The official one direction store got taken down. This is it, this is the end,' as another added, 'I just woke up and I saw that the One Direction store got taken down. Is it over? Is this a nightmare? if it is then somebody please wake me up.' sic

Others have taken Liam's unusual Instagram post to be a reference to the length of time that has passed since the band were all together.

The band members went their separate ways back in January 2016, with the aim of pursuing their individual projects.

While Zayn Malik was the first to release solo material after leaving the band, Niall, Louis, Harry and Liam followed suit.

Sorry Directioners. It looks like they're not coming back anytime soon!
