The brand new Mean Girls movie has landed in cinemas

After it's successful run on Broadway, Mean Girls the Musical has finally landed it's own film! Based on the 2004 film that featured icons such as Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Rachel McAdams, the film was a huge hit and then made its way on Broadway in April 2018.

Rumoured in 2021 that a film was on the way, as of November 2023 the trailer and release date was announced, and now the film is eventually out in UK cinemas.

When is it out?

The new movie landed in UK cinemas on Wednesday 17th January 2024.

What is Mean Girls the musical about?

Mean Girls the musical centres on Cady Heron, a teenager starting a new school having previously been home schooled in Africa where her parents worked. Eager to fit in, Cady quickly makes friends with Janis and Damien who aren't the biggest fans of the school's popular girls, also known as The Plastics.

Cady is tasked with integrating herself into The Plastics and reporting back on all the gossip- but things don't quite go to plan. With the introduction of the famous Burn Book, the school is quickly torn apart by Cady's actions and the students must learn to rebuild their trust and respect for one another. Mean Girls the musical really will have you feel like you've been personally victimised by Regina George!

Angourie Rice as Cady Heron

Taking on the main role as Cady, Australian born Angourie Rice has several international credits including Spider-Man: Far From Home, Black Mirror and Netflix's Senior Year.

Reneé Rapp as Regina George

After taking the role as Regina George on Broadway Reneé will return to the roll on the silver screen. Reneé is best known for being Regina as well as her role as Leighton in the comedy series The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Bebe Wood as Gretchen Weiners

Singer and actress Bebe will be playing the toaster strudel heir Gretchen Weiners. Bebe is best known for her roles in The Real O'Neals as Shannon and as Lake Meriwether on the Hulu Original series Love, Victor.

Avantika Vandanapu as Karen Smith

Completing the plastics is Avantika Vandanapu. Avantika is known for her stellar dancing career and is also credited in Netflix's Senior Year as well as The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Auli’i Cravalho as Janis Ian

Taking on the role as Regina George's enemy, Auli'i is best known for her debut role as Disney's Moana. Auli'i then went on to star in Netflix's All Together Now and comedy Crush.

Jaquel Spivey as Damian Leigh

After Jaquel played Damian Leigh on Broadway so well it's only fitting he got to play the iconic role on the screen too. Jaquel is most known for his role in A Strange Loop along with being in The Amber Ruffin Show.

Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels

Taking on the role as Cady Heron's love interest, Christopher is best known for his work in the series The Summer I Turned Pretty, as well as the 2020 film Dalí Land.

Ashely Park

Although it hasn't been announced what part Ashley will play yet she did have a stint on the Broadway production as Gretchen Weiners in which she won a Tony award for.

Busy Phillips as Mrs. George

Busy will be joining as the iconic cool mum Mrs. George. Busy is best known for her role in the American comedy show Freaks and Geeks as well as her role as Karen in the film White Chicks

Jenna Fischer as Mrs. Heron

Mrs. Heron also known as Cady's mum will be played by Jenna Fischer. Jenna is known for her role as Pam in the hit series The Office as well as staring in Blades of Glory and Hall Pass.

Tim Meadows

Tim Meadows is speculated to return but with no role confirmed yet. Tim played Mr. Duvall in the original 2004 film. Tim is best known for his roles in the comedy film Grown up's as well as being one of the longest-running cast members on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live.

Tina Fey

Like Tim it is not confirmed as to which role Tina will play. In the original film Tina played Ms. Norbury as well as writing the film. Tina was a cast member and head writer for the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 1997 to 2006.

Is Mean Girls the musical based on the film?

Yes, it is based on the film. Released in 2004, Mean Girls had us all wearing pink on Wednesdays and its transition to the stage has proved nothing short of spectacular.

Who is directing the film?

Husband and wife Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne signed on to direct the new adaptation. The pair co-created the TV series Quarter Life Poetry, Mean Girls will mark their directorial debut on a studio film.

Who wrote Mean Girls?

Tina Fey wrote the book Mean Girls the musical, as well as writing the 2004 film. Tina is joined by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin who wrote the music and lyrics respectively. Mean Girls the musical is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw and Gregg Barnes heads up costume design. This is no High School production!

Is Mean Girls the musical coming to the West End?

The musical adaptation of Mean Girls was expected to arrive in the West End by spring 2021 but the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to that.

Producer Lorne Michaels said in January 2021: “We remain excited to bring this musical to the big screen, relaunch the tour and prepare for a London production. I look forward to the day, hopefully soon, when theatres can open their doors again.”

However their is rumours of Mean Girls coming to the West End hopefully in 2024.

Is Mean Girls still on Broadway

The Broadway production of Mean Girls was forced to close in March 2020 along with theatres across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In January 2021 it was announced that the show had closed for good and would not be opening back on Broadway.

However, the musical resumed it's North American tour with it's final performance taking place in May 2023.
