Lewis Capaldi at Glastonbury

Lewis took to the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2023, performing in a late afternoon slot on the Saturday ahead of Lizzo. Although he sang many of his huge hits very well, he started to struggle towards the end of the performance due to losing his voice and his recent diagnosis of Tourette's Syndrome.

He told the crowd: "I'm going to be honest everybody, but I'm starting to lose my voice up here, but we're going to keep going and we're going to go until the end. I just need you all to sing with me as loud as you can if that's okay?"

The incredible audience powered him through, and were able to sing his songs for him when he couldn't. Although he apologised to those who came to see him, they showed their support by singing "Oh, Lewis Capaldi".

Lewis announced a tour break

At the end of his Glastonbury performance, Lewis announced that he would be taking some more time off to fully recover: "I recently took three weeks off just because I've been non-stop the past year and I wanted to take a wee break from my head for my mental health.

"I wanted to come back and do Glastonbury because it's obviously so incredible so I just want to thank you all for coming out. I was scared but you've really made me feel at ease so thank you very much for that."

Three days after his performance at Glasto, Lewis took to Instagram to confirm that he would not be going on tour as planned towards the end of the year, writing: 'I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this and I'd hoped 3 weeks away would sort me out.

'But the truth is I'm still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette's and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.

'I'm so incredibly sorry to everyone who had planned to come to a show before the end of the year but I need to feel well to perform at the standard you all deserve. Playing for you every night is all I've ever dreamed of so this has been the most difficult decision of my life. I'll be back as soon as I possibly can.'

On New Year's Eve 2023, Lewis shared an update on his health, in addition to announcing the release of 'Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent' (Extended Edition)', which includes five extra tracks.

Taking to Instagram, he wrote: 'Firstly, I want to start this by saying I hope you're all doing well out there, I've missed you! As most of you will know, I'm currently taking some time off to focus on my health and wellbeing and it's been going great!

'I've been working with some incredible professionals to help me learn about and cope better with my Tourette's and anxiety issues. I'm really happy to say I've noticed a marked improvement in both since I decided to take some time off back in June.'

Lewis cancelled his shows before Glasto

Lewis was already struggling before he took to the stage at Glastonbury, cancelling performances for three week ahead of his show at Worthy Farm. Posting a statement on his Instagram Story, Lewis wrote: 'The last few months have been full on both mentally and physically, I haven't been home properly since Christmas and at the moment I'm struggling to get to grips with it all.
