Woman dies after falling from M6 bridge in Lancashire

The carriageway was shut for a number of hours yesterday afternoon

A woman has died after falling from a bridge onto the M6 near Preston.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound carriageway in Barnacre at just before 3.30 yesterday afternoon.

A 50 year old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and the woman's family is being supported by specially trained officers.

In a statement, Lancashire Police said: "We were called at 3.25pm yesterday (23rd April) to a report of a woman falling from a bridge at Barnacre, near Preston.

"Emergency services attended and very sadly a 50-year-old woman was found on the carriageway.

"She was pronounced dead at the scene. Our thoughts are very much with her family and loved ones at this distressing time.

The death isn't being treated as suspicious and officers are compiling a file to be handed to the Coroner.
