Mum-of-two donates 5,000 pints of breast milk to help newborns

A mum-of-two from Oregon, USA has been donating her breast milk for premature babies and gay dads to feed their newborns.

Elisabeth has hyperlactation syndrome which causes her to produce much more milk than a 'normal' woman would, so she has been donating the milk to those who can't produce it themselves. For up to 10 hours a day Elisabeth will selflessly express the milk which is then packaged, labelled and stored in huge freezers in her house.

The 29-year-old who has two daughters of her own, two-year-old Isabella and six-month-old Sophia, still finds time to feed her own daughter, as well as collecting the milk she donates.

As reported by the Mirror Elisabeth said, "I realised I was an overproducer when I was pregnant with my first child, but when I had my second baby my supply ramped up.

"Now Sophia is six-months-old I pump five times a day - as soon as I wake up, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner and again at midnight."

Elisabeth's milk has been used to feed thousands of babies and she says, "I don't discriminate - I have donated to gay couples and to mothers who are on medication or had their breast removed due to breast cancer.

"It's an amazing feeling."

Elisabeth divides her milk between those local to her, who compensate her for her time, and the California milk bank Prolacta Bioscience. She is paid $1 for every ounce she provides, but doesn't make a profit from this once she has paid for the equipment, storage and extra food she needs.
