Discussions are taking place into the possibility of Grimsby getting a new ice rink.

The current one on Cromwell Road has been run by a community group - Grimsby Ice Rink CIC for the last 7 years.

They say it's getting old and is smaller than they would like.

The group are now hoping to secure Government funding.

They've met with Grimsby MP Lia Nici who's promised to lobby both the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Sport England about possible funding.

The rink was previously in council hands before the community group took over running it in 2017.

They say the rink has been going since 1975 and there's a strong case for a replacement.

Funding remains the key issue.

It's thought it could attract skaters from other places in the region too

At this stage there's no location for any possible new rink.

The group says demand for ice skating has been growing and a new facility would help to meet that.

It's understood there's particular interest from ice dancers.

Meanwhile, designs for a new rink have been proposed by a company called Ice Tech.

A rink in Malmo, Sweden, which is modelled on an upturned Viking ship, has provided inspiration.

The group thinks a new rink would be financially viable and attract skaters from other places in the region too.
