An 89-year-old man's recovering after it's thought he was tasered outside his own home in Stockport as someone tried to steal his car.

Police say they were called just after midnight on Sunday 5 August 2018 to reports of an attempted robbery on Bakewell Road in Hazel Grove.

The victim, an 89-year-old man, was returning home after having been out for dinner with a friend. He pulled in to his driveway, parked his car and as he got out he was approached by an unknown man from behind.

The man grabbed the victim’s hand, and demanded that he hand over his keys. In the struggle, it is believed that the elderly man was tasered, causing him to fall to the ground.

At this point the offender rummaged through the victim’s pockets, took his keys and tried to steal his car but was unable to start it. He then ran off in the direction of Cavendish Road.

As he lay injured on the ground following the attack, neighbours of the elderly man heard his cries for help and rushed to assist.

An ambulance was called and paramedics treated the man for minor injuries.

Detective Inspector Kris Williams from GMP’s Stockport Borough said: “This was a cowardly attack on a vulnerable and elderly man outside his home and although he escaped with only minor injuries, he has been left shaken by this terrifying incident.

“The victim is now being supported by officers and my thoughts are with him and his family as he recovers from this ordeal.

“Our priority is to find the person responsible for this so I am appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed this incident or seen a man dressed in dark clothing running away from the Bakewell Road area of Hazel Grove late on Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday morning to please get in touch with police.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 063 of 05/08/18, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
