Police are hunting a man who befriended an elderly woman before punching her in the face and stealing her car in Stockport.

The 87-year-old was gardening outside her house on Clifton Park Road in Davenport at 4pm on Sunday (20th May) when the man approached her for a chat and asked for a drink.

He was very friendly and explained he had been walking a long way - he left after accepting the glass of water.

He returned two further times before coming back at about 8.30pm when he rang the woman’s doorbell.

When she opened the door he pushed her before punching her in the face.

The robber then snatched her purse and car keys, before driving off in her red Honda jazz car.

The victim needed stitches to her face and suffered bruising on her arm.

The car has not yet been recovered.

Detective Sergeant Mell Johnson, from GMP’s Stockport borough, said: “This is a particularly shocking incident where a man has targeted an innocent woman in what can only be described as a premeditated attack.

“To be assaulted and robbed in your own home is everybody’s worst nightmare and it must have been absolutely terrifying.

“I want to urgently appeal to anyone who may have any information, no matter big or small, to please contact police. We need to find the coward responsible for this callous incident.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 quoting reference number 2045 of 20/05/18, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
