GMP refers itself to watchdog over Stretford taser arrest

A man's appearing at magistrates on various charges over incident on Wednesday night

A 35 year old man's due before Manchester magistrates today (Friday 8th May) charged with several offences - after an incident which has gone viral on social media.

A video appears to show a man being tasered by Greater Manchester Police officers and they've confirmed the weapon was used against a man detained on Chester Road in Stretford around 11pm on Wednesday 6th May.

The man from Old Trafford's been charged with:

• Two counts of resisting a constable in the execution of their duty

• One count of driving at excess speed

• One count of not having vehicle insurance

• One count of being unfit to drive through drink

• One could of failing without reasonable excuse to cooperate with a preliminary test

• One count of failing to stop when required to do so

• One count of unnecessary travel

Due to the use of the taser during the arrest the Greater Manchester force has voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

GMP's Superintendent Mark Kenny, commented, "We are aware of public concern regarding this arrest and I want to reassure the public that this matter is being reviewed and treated seriously. In addition we have voluntarily referred this matter to the IOPC."
