Joseph's parents delight at campaign breakthrough
Parents say they're delighted as the Government looks at stiffer sentences for killer drivers.
The parents of Joseph Brown-Lartey who was killed by a dangerous driver in Rochdale have told us they're overwhelmed after the Government finally bowed to our campaign for stiffer sentences.
The Ministery of Justice has launched a public consultation looking at bringing in a life sentence for killer drivers.
It comes after a year of campaigning by KEY103 alongside Joseph's family - who felt let down by the Justice system.
Dangerous driver Addil Haroon sped through a red light at 80mph in a 30 zone and hit Joseph's car splitting it in two. The day before he posted a photo of his speedometre in the hired Audi A6 doing 142mph on the M62.
He also had no licence and no insurance but after pleading guilty was sentenced to just six years and was told he'll serve half behind bars.
The consultation seeks views on whether the current maximum penalties available to the courts should be increased. Proposals include:
· Increasing the maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving from 14 years to life.
· Increasing the maximum sentence for causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs from 14 years to life.
· Creating a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving, with a maximum sentence of three years.
· Increasing minimum driving bans for those convicted of causing death.

The consultation will run for for three months with potential changes being brought in early next year.
