A Manchester man has become the first person to be implanted with a new bionic eye device which allows people suffering with dry age related macular degeneration amd – which seriously impairs their vision- to be able to see.

The Argus 2 is an implant that is fitted in the eye and works in tandem with special glasses giving the user much improved vision- even with their eyes closed.

80 year-old Ray Flynn from Audenshaw was fitted with the device at the Royal Eye Hospital in an operation last month. Now Ray who’d previously only been able to see using his peripheral vision has much better eyesight.

The eye implant was developed by Second Sight Medical products alongside Professor Paulo Stanga who works as a surgeon at the hospital.

It’s hoped the technology could one day give those suffering with other serious eye problems the chance to see again.
