Tributes have been pouring in for Manchester MP Gerald Kaufman who passed away on Sunday aged 86. The Gorton MP, who previously served the Ardwick constituency was first elected to the House of Commons in 1970 as a Labour candidate and served various roles within the party during his distinguished career.

Under former Labour leader Michael Foot, Kaufman served as Shadow Environment Secretary before going on to become Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Foreign Secretary under Neil Kinnock during the 1980s and early 90s.

Kaufman moved to the back benches in 1992 where he continued to be an influential voice in the party, being knighted in 2004.

A book of condolence has been opened online and at Manchester Town Hall in the MP’s honour.
