Sir Peter Fahy has taken to the busy streets of Manchester to see for himself the good work a group of volunteers are doing to help keep the city centre safe during the bustling night life.

Manchester Street Angels have teams of people who patrol the Deansgate and Deansgate Lock area every Friday night, helping those who have become vulnerable through alcohol. The group was set up following a recruitment drive on KEY103 in response to the death of 17-year-old Adam Pickup who died after losing his way on a night out with friends in December 2013.

Since their launch in November the Angels have helped dozens of people by providing first aid, assistance to door staff, as well as making sure those who have become separated from friends make it home safely. The City Centre Police Teams have also praised their efforts in assisting officers, allowing them to continue dealing with other incidents in the city centre.

As a way of recognising their work the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police Sir Peter Fahy joined the Angels for a patrol on Friday night (15th May) to see for himself the duties the carry out.

Sir Peter said: “We’ve had some awful tragedies in Manchester involving young people. For instance in Manchester there’s the canal network, we sadly get some cases were people have drunk too much and become victims of crime, sometimes horrendous sexual assaults, because they are so vulnerable. To have people out there who are keeping an eye out, looking out for people who may have drunk too much, people who may need help or assistance, is invaluable and really helps the police.” He went on to say, “I always like to get out on patrol. I think it’s a really great way of meeting my own staff, meeting the public, and seeing life at the sharp end. Knowing the work the Street Angels do going on patrol with them is a great way of showing my support but also helps me to understand a bit about what they do and also I’m able to thank them for the great work they do”.
