Commuters hoping to travel on the Bury Line of the Metrolink this morning will have to re-think their plans as engineers continue to repair damage to overhead lines.

A dedicated replacement bus service is operating between Bury and Queens Road, calling at all Metrolink stops, with a tram service operating from Queens Road to Piccadilly and Altrincham.

It is estimated that tram services to Bury will be restored by early afternoon.

There was chaos on the Bury Line last night as passengers stuck on stranded trams took drastic action to get home - with many jumping from services down onto the tracks...

Repairs to overhead lines between Deansgate-Castlefield and Cornbrook were carried out successfully last night enabling all services which use these stops to run as normal from the start of service today.

Investigations are also taking place to establish the cause of the damage to the overhead lines in both locations.

Service updates will be provided via the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) website and @MCRMetrolink Twitter feed. Customers are also being updated via the passenger information display boards, public address systems and assisted by Customer Service Representatives at stops on the Bury line.

Danny Vaughan, Head of Metrolink for TfGM, said: "I apologise to our customers who are having to use alternative transport to make their journeys this morning. I understand that this is inconvenient and frustrating. Investigations have begun to find out the cause of the damage to the overhead lines but our immediate priority is to restore a full service on the Bury line as soon as possible."

Services on all other Metrolink lines are operating as normal.
