Stockport Lorry Driver's Sentenced Doubled

A Stockport man - who hijacked a Good Samaritan's van - and drove down the motorway with him clinging to the bonnet - has had his prison sentenced almost doubled.

43 year old Michael Keary's original sentenced was deemed "unduly lenient"

28 year old Christopher Ashton stopped on the M602 along with other workmen - to help Keary - when his lorry overturned.

But Keary - who was on bail for cannabis offences at the time - then decided to steal his van.

Chris clung onto the bonnet as he tried to stop him but Keary kept swerving from side to side and he eventually fell off and struck his head - he died three weeks later.

Keary's original sentence of just over 3 years has now been increased to six by the court of appeal.

Solicitor General Robert Buckland said after the appeal:

“I referred this case to the Court of Appeal as unduly lenient because I felt that three years and four months simply failed to reflect the gravity of the attack on this Good Samaritan.

It is also important that those who inflict violence on our streets are properly punished and I am pleased that the court has today increased his sentence to six years' imprisonment.”
