Two security guards at Stepping Hill Hospital have been honoured for their courage and compassion after they stoped a woman jumping off a bridge in Stockport.

Ali Jallow and Andy Tobin were working at the A&E unit when they spotted a woman in a distressed state leaving the hospital. They followed her to Bramhall Moor Lane bridge where she attempted to throw herself off onto the train tracks below.

The pair managed to grab her arms and legs but she turned out to be a professional kick-boxer and lashed out. Luckily they managed to drag her to safety and take her back to the hospital.

The online recruitment service 'GoToJobBoard' - which specialises in non-medical roles for the health service - held an unsung hero award ceremony in Manchester and honoured the pair for their bravery.

Mark Cherry, operations manager at GoToJobBoard, said: "The Unsung Hero Award has always set out to highlight the amazing work done by people in non-medical roles each and every day, and it’s great to see so many nominations from across the country.”

“Every Unsung Hero Award winner represents some of the most hard-working and dedicated non-medical staff in the NHS today.” said Mark Cherry. “Whether they are saving lives, dedicating their own time to benefit patients, or even just being a team player and helping out their fellow colleagues.”

“The NHS doesn’t get enough credit, especially when it comes to non-medical staff, so it’s great to host these awards and make NHS staff feel special and proud of the hard word they do every day.”
