Former United skipper Rio Ferdinand has announced he’s to pursue a professional boxing career with a view to challenging for a title.

The 38 year-old is being coached by former WBC Super middleweight champion Richie Woodall

A press release from Betfair who are supporting Ferdinand’s bid to pursue a boxing career said the former defender would be seeking to qualify for a British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) licence before starting training to fight in "a succession of bouts in 2017/18 with the ultimate aim to compete for a title belt."

Ferdinand played for the Reds for over 11 years joining from rivals Leeds United in 2002 for a then world record fee for a defender of around £30 million, going on to win six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Key 103 asked former WBA World Lightweight champion Anthony Crolla whether he felt Ferdinand could make a success of a career in the professional boxing world.
