Get to know Steve & Karen: The Breakfast presenters answer our Q&A

From their favourite guests to top Charva Choons!

Author: Georgie HollandPublished 16th Apr 2024

Here at Hits Radio North East and Hits Radio Teeside, we all know Steve & Karen as our amazing Breakfast Show presenters, bringing us the biggest hits and biggest throwbacks every weekday morning - but how well do you really know the pair? Well, thanks to our handy Q&A, you can find out everything you could need to know about Steve & Karen right here!

From each of their favourite guests on the show, top Charva Choon and what they love most about presenting, get to know Steve & Karen a bit better, and all of the ways you can tune in...

What is your favourite thing about doing the show?

Karen told us: 'People from the North East have great craic and we love getting you on and hearing your stories!'

Of course, Steve also that his favourite thing about the show is: 'Without a doubt getting people on the show. The listener always comes first. It's what we’ve always said from day one.'

Who is your favourite person you’ve ever had on the show?

A huge fan of the singer, Karen told us: 'Paloma Faith, I got a nervous rash and everything', whilst top fan Steve gushed: 'Sam Fender. I love that man!'

What's your favourite throwback song?

While Steve said: 'Another tough question, so many to pick. Totally depends on mood too. First one that popped in my head though, Bruno Mars ‘Nothin’ On You’,' Karen threw it back to the year 2000, answering: 'Outkast, 'Ms Jackson'. It never gets old'.

What’s your favourite Charva Choon?

As you all know, Charva Choons is a huge part of our mornings here at Hits Radio North East. When it comes to their favourite track, Karen told us: 'Oooh that’s tough, they’re all lush. At a push, Special D – 'Come With Me'.'

Steve was also torn when it came to picking his favourite, answering: 'Woah! That is a really hard question to answer. Can I pick two please? ‘Forever Young’ by Interactive, or Deedee ‘Forever’. I love seeing the crowd at Charva Choon live react and sing along to those.'

What’s your average Wonky score/weakest subject?

Of course, another huge part of our mornings with Steve & Karen is the Wonky Minute - but how do the pair get on with the questions themselves? Karen told us: 'Pretty high but I watch a lot of quiz shows! Maybe an 8. Geography is by far my weakest subject.'

Unsurprisingly, Steve was pretty similar, adding: 'As long as there are no maths questions I normally do ok. I’d say an average of 8.'

Who puts the kettle on in the morning?

Aah, the most important time of the day. Clearly trusted more with the all-important morning cuppa, Karen answered: 'Me, I wouldn’t trust Steve to make a decent brew, I’m very fussy. (Almost builders but plenty of milk, no sugar).'

Agreeing, Steve added: 'Always Karen! I’m weird and can’t drink tea with milk in, so it's always a green or fruity flavour. The small things that a friend does for you means the world, especially at 4am.'

Cat or dog person?

Karen told us: 'I used to have a cat called Jodie who was a law unto herself – I respect that in an animal', with Steve staying loyal to his canine friend, telling us: 'I love all animals so this is a tough one. As I own a dog called Ted, I’d have to say dog. Just in case he reads this.'

What was your first car?

It appears both Steve and Karen bagged themselves some good deals when they bought their first cars, with Karen telling us: 'A turquoise Vauxhall Nova, proper second hand Charva mobile which I bought for £500', and Steve laughing: 'You’ll have to google this one. An Austin Allegro. It belonged to my first girlfriend's dad. I bought it off him for £400.'

Trend setter or stuck in your ways?

Happy in his ways, Steve told us: 'Definitely not a trend setter. I always stick to the same formula. Good pair of footwear, jeans and a t-shirt or shirt.'

Karen answered: 'Quite happy being unfashionable, although I love that combats/cargo pants have made a comeback!'

Where can we find Steve & Karen on socials?

Steve & Karen are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. You can also now find the pair on TikTok, however as Steve says - 'We’re not quite sure how that one works yet!'
