Scarborough seafront has welcomed its first ever 'BinForGreenSeas' bin
Scarborough seafront has welcomed the Yorkshire Coast's first ever BinForGreenSeas rubbish bin with the aim of reducing the amount of plastic ending up in the ocean.
It's being generously funded by the GreenSeas Trust which has also arranged bins in tourist destinations in Lancashire, West Sussex, Somerset and Essex. More are planned across the country.
The Scarborough bin is the first anywhere in northern England.
It has been installed on Foreshore Road and the authority says its eye-catching design, in the form of a lifebuoy, and location, means it will be seen and used by hundreds of people each day.
It will be in place all year round to act as a permanent reminder of the urgent need to protect our waters to give the environment and marine habitats a lifeline.
At 1.5m in height the bin can be used by visitors and residents coming off Scarborough's golden sands or along the seafront, to responsibly dispose of their plastic waste.
The authority says in the UK alone, 700,000 plastic water bottles are littered every day.
Cllr Tony Randerson, Scarborough Borough Council cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said;
"I am so pleased that we’ve been able to secure a BinForGreenSeas bin in Scarborough.
"It is a pleasure to work with the GreenSeas Trust and I am very grateful for its support.
"I love our coastline and hope this partnership is another step towards protecting it for generations to come."
Cllr Eric Broadbent, Mayor of the borough of Scarborough said:
"This bin looks fantastic and I’m so pleased we’ve got it in place for the summer season.
"It is a great initiative by the GreenSeas Trust.
"I know how hard our staff are working to ensure the beaches are kept clean.
"This new bin will help residents and visitors to do their bit for our coast."

"As well as a practical way to responsibly dispose of their plastic waste, I hope it will help people make the connection between litter left thoughtlessly on beaches, or thrown in waterways, and the harmful effect it has on marine and human life.
"Each bin is both symbolic and practical in reducing plastic pollution.

John Senior MBE, Chair of South Bay Traders, said:
"I am so pleased to see this new bin. We’ve been campaigning for greater recycling facilities and this fits the bill.
