UPDATE - Police incident at York College

Tadcaster Road was closed after reports of a possible suspicious object on campus

Police have confirmed NO suspicious object has been found at York College.

Officers were called to the site just after 4 o'clock on Wednesday (16 March) afternoon.

Staff had reported a possible suspicious object on their campus.

Tadcaster Road was closed and a cordon was put in place as officers evacuated staff and students from buildings.

But following a search of the campus, nothing was found.

North Yorkshire Police issued this statement:

'Police were contacted at 4.10pm today (Wednesday 15 March) by York College who had been alerted to a possible suspicious object on their campus.

'Officers attended and assisted college staff in evacuating the building.

'Tadcaster Road was closed and a cordon was put in place to ensure the safety of members of the public.

'A search of the campus was completed and nothing was found.

'Tadcaster Road was open at 7.15pm and the cordon on the college campus was lifted at 9.38pm.

'An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident.'

Original statement from North Yorkshire Police:

'Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident on Tadcaster Road in York.

'A cordon is in place and the road is currently closed in both directions between York College and the Tesco roundabout.

'Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.'
