A woman has died after being hit by a vehicle on the M6 near Warrington.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway between Junction 21 and Junction 21a at around 12.15am this morning.

Police say they came across a collision involving a white car, and then discovered that a woman had been struck by a vehicle on the M6, by the M62 sliproad.

The 52 year old, from Stoke-on-Trent, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man from Preston has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

In an update, Cheshire Police said: "At 12.15am today (Tuesday 9 April), officers came across a collision involving a white car on the M6 motorway between Junction 21 and Junction 21a.

"Shortly after officers discovered that a 52-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent had been struck by a vehicle on the M6 to the M62 slip road.

"Attempts to save the woman were conducted, but despite officers’ best their efforts, she was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene at 1.14am."
