Bastille Day attack: Children amongst those killed in Nice
Death toll continues to rise
Over 80 people have been killed after a truck purposefully ploughed into a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the French city of Nice.
What we know:
- A large truck was driven into crowds celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade de Anglais. - The truck was driven at speed for around 2km. - At least 80 people have been confirmed dead, including children. There are reports this has now reached 84. - The driver was shot dead after firing shots into the crowd. - The truck was loaded with weapons and grenades. - This is being treated as a terror attack. - French President François Hollande has described the attack as a “monstrosity”. - The country’s state of emergency, which was due to expire on 26 July, has been extended by 3 months. - Nice hospitals have launched an appeal for blood donations.
The incident took place as spectators gathered to watch a Bastille Day fireworks display on the city's waterfront.
President François Hollande addressed the nation in a live television broadcast and said "This attack has all the elements to be called a terror attack." He went on to say "It is clear we have to do everything in our power to fight this terrorist plague.
The Foreign Office has advised anyone in the area to follow the instructions of French authorities.
A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister is being kept updated on reports coming in from Nice. "We are shocked and concerned by the scenes there. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible incident on what was a day of national celebration." They went on to say "The FCO are in touch with the local authorities to seek more information and we stand ready to help any British nationals and to support our French partners."
Britian's newly appointed Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, tweeted that he was 'shocked and saddened' by the attack.
