18 years ago today, at just 19 years of age Mark Zuckerberg launched ‘The Facebook’ from his dorm room at Harvard University. With roughly 2.89 billion monthly active users nowadays, Facebook has grown to be the most popular social network worldwide.

Mr Zuckerburg announced earlier this week a new series of updates to Facebook services - including the introduction of screenshot notifications to its 'secret' Messenger service.

Part of the changes will allow users to get a notification if one of their disappearing messages has been 'screenshotted' by the other user.

Anyone trying to grab a sneaky photo of a message will be instantly exposed with a pop-up notification.

This feature is part of the Messenger’s ‘secret conversation’ functionality - which is similar to the encrypted messages sent on WhatsApp.

GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats will also be added.

Mr Zuckerberg updated his followers on Facebook with a status update. He shared an image of a chat he was having with his wife Priscilla Chan, which showed the alert ‘Priscila took a screenshot.’

The status reads: 'New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message.'

This isn’t a completely new concept for social media - Snapchat has used this feature for a number of years.

The screenshot alert has already started to roll out across the United States, with it expected to hit the rest of the world in the next few weeks.

Instagram is also thought to be getting a similar function, stay tuned for that! 📲
