Another previously unheard Coltrane album is being released
It follows on the heels of last year’s album - a 1963 recording ‘Both Directions at Once’
A year after the hugely successful release of Coltrane’s 1963 lost album recording ‘Both Directions at Once’, Impulse! Records has announced another previously unheard album from the late saxophone giant John Coltrane.
This time it’s a session from the following year; Coltrane went into the studio with McCoy Tyner (piano), Elvin Jones (drums) and Jimmy Garrison (bass) to re-visit and re-record some of his most famous pieces, as a favour to a film producer friend – Gilles Groulx from Quebec who wanted to use the music as a soundtrack. The recording was engineered by the revered producer Rudy Van Gelder in his New York studio using 1/4" analogue mono tape on June 24th, 1964.
Eventually the music was pretty much shelved (Gilles Groulx only used around 10 minutes for his film) but now Universal Music have remastered the analogue tapes into a 37-minute album titled ‘Blue World’ and set for release on September 27th.
