Gondwana Records founder and trumpeter Matthew Halsall is set to perform a full set of his latest record, Salute to the Sun, in aid of the mental health charity Mind.

The performance is set to take place in Manchester's beautiful Hallé St Peters church.

On the performance, Matthew has said “Oneness and togetherness are important to me as an artist and as a person. And this has been a hard year for many people globally. It felt right to get together with so many of my regular collaborators and try to create something special to share with you all. It also felt right that we should donate all the profits to charity and we felt that with everyone so impacted by the effects of COVID-19, and the resulting lockdowns, that we would like to support the mental health charity Mind”

Salute to the Sun is the trumpeter's first album as a leader since Into Forever (2015) and marks the debut of his new band. A hand-picked ensemble featuring some of Manchester’s finest young musicians. The album draws inspiration from themes and ideas that have inspired Halsall through the years ideas of ecology, the environment and harmony with nature.

Having recently talked to us, Matthew describes the album as an "exotic tropical escape". You can hear him outline the music and recording process behind his latest project below:
