About Rouhangeze

Mauritius-born singer-songwriter, composer and producer Rouhangeze celebrates unity in diversity - exploring musical cross-pollination of jazz and beyond.

What introduced you to jazz music?

Good fortune at the age of 9. My father's cousins who lived in France gifted us with the 1990s ECM record ‘Took Up The Runes’ by Jan Garbarek.

Your favourite melody to hum in the morning?

Most days, they are my own. They just emerge. My mood influences the sound and melody, but typically I hum in a therapeutic way to give myself a sonic cuddle.

What is the album that expanded your idea of jazz?

A few over the past 20 years. The 1958 ‘Ascenseur pour l'échafaud’ by Miles Davis stands out. The music of The Joe Zawinul Syndicate, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny...

I often find my way back to Jan Garbarek's ‘I Took Up The Runes’ - one that reminds me that music is the ladder to the soul. Every time I hear it, I feel elevated and inspired.

What is your most memorable jazz gig?

Rachelle Ferrell at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club

What can people expect from your show on Jazz FM?

A broad range of subgenres of jazz. Music from different corners of the world. The show aims to convey the concept "unity in diversity" or "pluralism in togetherness." Jazz is ever shifting, ever-evolving. Its beauty and magic increase inspiring awe, especially when diverse cultures and traditions across the world cross-pollinate.
