Tru Thoughts Mix - Jazz FM Voices

Uplifting the essence of jazz and soul that has nestled in Brighton.

Author: Claire UmneyPublished 27th Jul 2021

Throughout 2021, Jazz FM Voices is asking - "what is important to us and our musical community?"

As part of this, we will be inviting some our favourite musicians, selectors and creatives to share the music that speaks to them and fuels their creativity.

This month, we've invited DJ, and founder of Tru Thoughts, Robert Luis, to hop on the decks and devise a mix for us - and it is truly a vibe!

"This mix focuses on more current music, but a few classics are thrown in too. Enjoy!"

Robert chose to shine some light on jazz and soul artists that epitomise the wholehearted embrace of Jazz and Soul in Brighton. He says:

“The mix represents artists who live in Brighton or have lived in Brighton covering Soul and Jazz music styles. It includes new artists like 18-year-old singer Isabelle Brown to more established singers like Alice Russell (an epic tune produced by Quantic). With a new generation of Jazz from Ebi Soda and Vels Trio. Plus, the legendary Omar (who has been living in Brighton for a number of years). Brighton has always been a city that embraces Jazz and Soul music (from the Mod’s in the 60’s to Russ Dewberry’s big Jazz Bop events in the 90’s to now). This mix focuses on more current music, but a few classics are thrown in too. Enjoy."
