The Lost Tapes: Series 2 revealed
Never-before-heard interviews from Quincy Jones, Blossom Dearie and Quincy Jones will be broadcast for the first time in our second series

Our acclaimed series - The Lost Tapes - is returning for a second series, and is featuring never-before-heard interviews from legendary producer Quincy Jones, pianist-vocalist Blossom Dearie and fellow pianist Horace Silver.
The interviews, which are brought to us by the UK's National Jazz Archive, were recorded with the jazz stars in their heydays during the 1960s.
The second series follows on from the broadcast of the original series in 2021, which showcased interviews from Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson, drummer Art Blakey and vocalist Sarah Vaughan, as well as a one-off special with legendary saxophonist Stan Getz.
Who is hosting the series?
The Lost Tapes will once again be hosted by Helen Mayhew, with each episode featuring highlights from the many hours of interviews with long since departed legends.
Who will be featured in The Lost Tapes?
Blossom Dearie:
Journalist Les Tomkins interviewed Blossom Dearie in 1966, on one of her frequent visits to London. On the tape, she talks about the kind of lesser-known, tasteful songs she likes to sing, and the art of providing piano accompaniment. She tells a wonderful story about inspiring an arrangement by Miles Davis and Gil Evans’ Once Upon A Summertime.
Horace Silver:
Recorded at the White House Hotel in London in 1968, just before his run at Ronnie Scott’s, Horace talks to Les Tomkins about his favourite recording and preference for smaller groups. He discusses various jazz players and reflects on the current trends in free jazz and his move into lyric writing. One highlight is the chance to hear the story of ‘Song for my father’ told in his own words.
Quincy Jones:
Recorded at the Mayfair Hotel in October 1963, Quincy is at an fascinating point in his career; touring, directing orchestral records for Dizzy Gillespie, moving into pop production and taking his first steps into A & R (Artist and Repertoire – managing the development of new stars on the scene) – he also has some strong words for those who won’t move with the times!

What is the National Jazz Archive?
The National Jazz Archive is a registered charity founded in 1988. The Archive holds the UK’s finest collection of written, printed and visual material on jazz, blues and related music, from 1919 to the present day.
The Archive is based in Loughton Library in Essex, with a satellite archive at Birmingham City University. Together they hold more than 4000 reference books, specialist journals and bulletins spanning over 800 titles, around 40 personal collections, artwork, ephemera and photographs, along with an extensive oral history collection. It is the story of art, fashion, cultural diversity and social progress.
