Everything we know about Slipknot's seventh album so far

Corey Taylor has spoken yet again about Slipknot's upcoming seventh album, a follow-up to their 2019 sixth record 'We Are Not Your Kind'.

Speaking to a fan as part of GalaxyCon on 26th August 2021, Corey explained that falling ill with Covid-19 interrupted his final vocal sessions for the album "I was actually supposed to finish my vocals this week! I got screwed man!"

Corey continued "I actually only have, really, three songs left to do. I've done all the other tracks, because I've been doing them in between tours."

Elaborating on the type of music fans can expect to hear on the as-yet untitled album Corey said: "There's some tunes that are actually really outside of the realm of what we've done before... And there's some f---ing savage heavy s---t which I'm really stoked on."

In another recent interview, he confessed that the band's new output will "f---ing freak people out", calling it an "expansion" of the previous album.

Speaking to Consequence, Corey explained: "It’s an expansion of where we were at on ‘We Are Not Your Kind’. This band has always prided itself on expanding boundaries, expanding our musical vision."

He continued: "It’s got the heavy... There’s so many different elements on this one, man, that let’s just say I’m really excited to get the vocals on it. I’ve got all the lyrics written and whatnot. I’m starting to fine-tune everything. It’s gonna be interesting, man.

"I think I talked about it somewhere else where this is the first time in a long time on a Slipknot album where I’m not just talking about things from my point of view; I’m trying to look at things from other people’s point of view and tell different stories again."

When will Slipknot's seventh album be released?

There's no official release date just yet, but in November 2020 the band confirmed the were tentatively hoping to release a new album in 2021 alongside finishing up all their touring commitments.

In July 2021 guitarist Jim Root posted a video on his Instagram story entitled 'k, bye' . The video showed the interior of a recording studio filled with guitar amps, crates of gear and some tom drums. Fans were left to speculate whether this meant the end of Slipknot in the studio, or just Jim finishing guitar parts.

Speaking to Kerrang! Radio's Loz Guest back in February 2021, Corey Taylor teased something "massive" saying "there's some stuff brewing that I can't talk about, but it's massive... I can say this: you will hear about it probably in the next month or so."

So far, whatever that announcement was, it has not come in the form of new album news.

In another chat with Scott Bowling’s Good Company, Corey revealed that Slipknot only have one more album left to make under their current record contract and it could see the light of day next year.

“The plan right now with Slipknot is to try and a) finish up the touring next year, and b) we’re thinking about kind of putting another album out maybe next year,” Corey explained.

“But I don’t know. I don’t know what the plan is yet. I just know that we all kind of feel like there’s unfinished business and we wanna finish that out before we do anything. But I know that we were talking about doing it, ’cause we only have one album left on our contract.”

Speaking at a promotional event for Slipknot’s No. 9 Iowa Whiskey in October, percussionist Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan confirmed the masked metallers had been leisurely writing new material during lockdown.

"Since everybody's taken a lot of time off, we thought we'd utilise it by getting together and do what we probably do best, which is write music," Clown said.

"So, it's been good, because there's no pressure. It's not like we have to. We're doing it 'cause we want to. And it's just been a blessing, because boredom can set in. And I know all of us in the world are going crazy, so we're really lucky to be able to be together and do what we love most."

Speaking to US radio station 95.5 KLOS in March 2021, Corey teased a little more about the record, saying it could be a concept album: "We've compiled a lot of material. Me and Clown (percussionist Shawn Crahan) have talked about something really, really cool, if we can pull it off.

"There's a chance that it could be conceptual — if we can really do it right. I mean, the music is brilliant. It expands on what we did with 'We Are Not Your Kind' — it kind of blossoms from there — but the great thing is, it's got not only that, but it's got everything that you would want from a Slipknot project; there's the heavy stuff, there's the dark stuff, there's the melodic stuff, there's the weird stuff.

"We have so many different flavours that we can play with that, now, at this point, it's just us kind of mixing and matching and seeing what excites us."

Slipknot’s last studio album ‘We Are Not Your Kind’ stormed straight in at Number 1 in the UK when it was released in August 2019.

Slipknot toured the UK at the start of 2020 taking in arena shows in Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Sheffield, Nottingham, Cardiff, Birmingham and London, however their Knotfest UK gig in August was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Corey Taylor’s debut solo album ‘CMFT’ was released in October and it peaked at No.11.
