System of a Down singer Serj Tankian joined Prophets of Rage on stage in New Zealand last night (20th March) for a ‘stunning, emotional and beautiful’ tribute to the late-great Chris Cornell.

Serj, who resides in the New Zealand town of Warkworth, surprised the capacity crowd at the Spark Arena in Auckland when he appeared on stage to perform a cover of Audioslave’s ‘Like A Stone’ with Prophets of Rage.

Chris’s former Audioslave band mate Tom Morello was quick to praise the performance, writing on Instagram: “Thanks @serjtankian for a stunning, emotional, beautiful, chilling tribute to #ChrisCornell tonight in Auckland.”

Serj himself later posted: “Thanks @tommorello and @prophetsofrage for having me on stage last night for a tribute to @chriscornellofficial in Auckland.”

It’s not the first time Serj and Prophets of Rage have joined forces for a version of ‘Like a Stone’. They performed the track together at Germany’s Rock am Ring Festival last June, a month after Chris Cornell’s death.

Prophets of Rage have also performed an instrumental version of ‘Like a Stone’ at several shows, including Download Festival 2017.

The band play Hordern Pavilion in Sydney tomorrow night before taking to Download Festival Melbourne over the weekend.
