Last night the biggest night in the film industry took place - the Oscars, officially known as the Academy Awards. This year was the 90th anniversary of the awards show, hosted by TV host Jimmy Kimmel for the second time, and this time around he decided to do something a little different.

Taking to the stage during the ceremony he said, "I want to take a moment to thank the people who actually go to see the movies you make."

When the audience started clapped he continued, "I don't think you fully understand. I don't want you to just clap, applause is nice, but I want to really thank them."

Jimmy then showed footage of a screen full of people watching a film in a nearby cinema. He then asked for film stars to volunteer to go with him to the cinema to give them a surprise!

Gathering stars such as Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot and Star Wars actors Mark Hamill and Lupita Nyong'o, Jimmy went to the nearby cinema.

Standing outside the screen of unsuspecting movie-goers, Jimmy, along with Gal Gadot, Ansel Elgort, Mark Hamill, Margot Robbie, Mark Hamill, Guillermo del Toro, Emily Blunt, Lupita Nyong'o, Armie Hammer, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Guillermo, described what they were going to do.

Armed with baskets full of snacks, a hot dog cannon and huge six foot long sub, Jimmy said, "we're going to fire hot dogs into audience!"

Jimmy and Gal then walked in mid-film, surprising the audience saying, "Hi everyone, how are you doing?"

Gal continued, "I don't know if you know who we are..."

Jimmy and Gal then explained why they were there, thanking the movie-goers as the footage from the Oscars was shown on the big screen behind them.

Jimmy then went on to say, "and we have a surprise for you, I noticed you don't have any snacks..."

This was a cue for the film stars to come out, handing out all the goodies!

Back in the The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where the Oscars were taking place, The Shape of Water was the big winner, winning four of its 13 nominations. British actor Gary Oldman took home the prestigious Best Actor award for his part in Darkest Hour, meanwhile former Hollyoaks actors Rachel Shenton and Chris Overton won Best Live Action Short Film for The Silent Child. Rachel delivered her speech in sign language, as a promise she had made to her six-year-old co-star.

Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell

Sam Rockwell's portrayal of a racist cop in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has proved controversial, but that didn't stop him walking away with the Best Supporting Actor statuette, his first Oscar.

Away from the main ceremony Emma Watson was turning heads at the Vanity Fair after-party. She looked stunning on the red carpet showing off a new tattoo on her forearm supporting the Time's Up Campaign, however fans were quick to notice the tattoo had a big mistake.
