Since winning multiple BRIT Awards earlier this year, pop star Dua Lipa has received criticism from online trolls. With topics ranging from her use of inappropriate language, breaking up with her boyfriend and her heritage, the 'New Rules' singer has now responded.

The Daily Star reports that the 22-year-old singer said, "One day, people are really standing up for empowering women and the next, it’s about dragging them down.

"It’s important to remember that not everyone feels the way that some trolls feel. It’s upsetting because I’m also human – when people do say mean things online or they assume they really know something about your personal life, which they don’t."

Dua has seen huge success lately, both in the charts and awards, taking home three awards at this year's BRIT Awards, but it hasn't stopped some trolls 'attacking' her.

Last month her use of the word 'Babi' in an Instagram post came under fire. The post was to wish her dad a happy birthday when she said, 'Happy Birthday Babi ❤️❤️❤️ Love you, miss you, wish I was home to give you a big hug and a kiss! Xxx'.

The singer, who's parents are from Kosovo, used the word Babi which means Dad in Albanian, however some fans became offended because the same word means 'pig' in Malay.

In response she said, "It was actually quite mean on their behalf, because obviously I’m not talking in Malay. I speak another language as well, and the language that I speak with my parents is my heritage. I would like that to be respected."

However, the singer later changed her caption on Instagram from 'Babi' to 'Dad'.

Dua is about to start her UK tour and some tickets are still available to buy from Aloud.com

Earlier this year rumours emerged of a collaboration between Dua and American pop star Ariana Grande. And this week it was thought that a clip was leaked online. Many fans are hoping the new song will drop at the end of the month, which is when Ariana is expected to drop new music for the first time in nearly a year.
