Earlier today, Tom Daley made us all proud when he and diving partner Matty Lee won gold in the men’s synchronised 10 metres platform dive in Tokyo. But ahead of his trip to Japan, Tom left a surprise for his family to open before the big day!

Tom's husband Dustin Lance Black posted a video on Twitter which showed a small box that Tom had left for them to open. The pair's son Robbie opened the box to find a USB stick with a message from 'papa'.

Dustin and Robbie watch the video message where Tom thanks his family for their continued support and that they've helped take a lot of the pressure off of him.

In the message Tom says: “As you know, the support from you guys has been what has been able to get me through some of my crazy days, some of my easy days, the highs and lows and everything in between.”

He went on to say: "And I think the journey from Rio – where I was at my lowest point in my sporting career – to now coming into this Olympics in completely different mind spaces."

He also reminded Robbie to make sure he wears his "nice t-shirt when you’re supporting papa" and for him to cheer loud enough so papa can hear!

Earlier this month Tom told The Mirror that diving was no longer the most important thing to him anymore now he has a family: “Diving is extremely important to me. But I have other important things in my life, mainly being my son."

Tokyo is Tom's fourth Olympics since he first competed in Beijing in 2008 but this was the first time the diver will be taking home the gold medal!
