He's had some bangers!

Scottish DJ Calvin Harris is back on the scene with his MASSIVE new collab 'By Your Side' featuring the lovely Tom Grennan.

As their pair's new track dropped today (Friday 4th June), Calvin popped in for a chat with KISS Breakfast's Harriet Rose, where he spoke about the reasons for working with Tom, why he decided to take a break, and which of his mammoth tracks mean the most to him.

Since his rise to fame of becoming one of the biggest DJ's on the planet, Calvin has racked up a back-catalogue of some amazing hits, working with artists such as Rihanna, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, Frank Ocean and many more.

These collabs have resulted in some epic hit singles, and Calvin confirmed his singles 'We Found Love’ and ‘Ready for the Weekend’ are the most important to him.

Speaking to Harriet, Calvin said: "Like you say that there's music that is the soundtrack to all of our lives, basically. And there's songs that you can go back to, and they're so important, more important to you than anybody else. And it's kind of like that.

"The ones that may be aren't as hugely popular would also be my, some of my favourite ones. But I mean, the first Rihanna one, 'We Found Love' was kind of important for me, but that's kind of like the obvious one for me to pick.

"If I was gonna pick just one it would actually be 'Ready For The Weekend' from that second album, because I remember what I was doing when I recorded that. And you know, my label almost dropped me and I was lucky to get the second album and I played a couple of songs and they were and then I went away and I just felt like fully on my own in this thing. Try to do this thing. And then I just really liked the chords that's that's kind of it."

Check out Calvin Harris' biggest collaborations to date:

'Dance wiv Me' - Dizzee Rascal featuring Calvin Harris and Chrome, 2008

After releasing his debut album 'I Created Disco' in 2007, Calvin and Dizzee met at a festival that year. Dizzee had been a huge fan of 'Acceptable in the '80s', and the pair discussed working together. Calvin said of the collaboration, "Dizzee texted me, saying he'd done this a cappella over someone else's music, but his verse was too good for their music, so could he do it with me instead? So I spent a long time on it, to make sure it lived up to his expectations. I sent him the track, and he called me at 2 in the morning to say it was amazing, so I knew it was good."

'Bounce' - featuring Kelis, 2011

Calvin's next major collab came in the form of 2011 summer anthem 'Bounce' starring Kelis. The first single from his third album '18 Months', 'Bounce' peaked at Number 2 in the UK charts after being kept off the top spot by Example's 'Changed the Way You Kiss Me'.

The song also marked Calvin's decision to stop singing on his tracks; he said, "I'll do tracks with people who can sing well – proper artists, proper performers. I can focus on what I'm much better at, which is making music. I'm just not cut out for that role. I kind of fell into it a few years ago – the live show had to happen, I had to be the frontman because I was doing the vocals on the songs. It went all right. I spent a few years trying to get it really properly good, but it dawned on me it wasn't going to get much better. I've taken the singing thing as far as I can."

Teaming up with Rihanna for another 2011 summer banger, 'We Found Love' went to Number 1 in the UK and was certified 3X Platinum, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. Former X Factor star Leona Lewis was originally going to sing the song, but she didn't commit and it went to Rihanna instead.

Calvin said of the song, "'We Found Love,' is the most successful thing I've done ever... It's not strictly a song by me, obviously, it's by Rihanna. She sings it...It was great to work with her... No one could have taken it as far as she did. You can't escape it in America. I've heard it a lot. I've heard it probably more times today than I did when I was mixing it. Which is a good thing."

He said, "With Florence, she was really busy at that time. She was in the middle of a tour and she had like three days to record something, so I wasn't there, anything could've come back. I didn't think she'd do it. She seemed a really unattainable artist to reach for. I think she would've done it if the song was right and the people were right and it was all at the right time."

Of course, Calvin has been a little quiet over the last few years, taking an 18-month break, but it sounds like it wasn't actually planned.

Revealing the main reason for his break, Calvin told us: "I think part of it was because I had two or three songs that were ready ago, and that there was one that was sung, very famous singer. And then another one that was about to be sung by very famous singer. And then they both they both fell through, I thought this was in the middle of nowhere, almost like coming up to summer 2019.

"And I thought, well, that's two songs have fallen through now, maybe I need to just do a little bit of gardening. And maybe that wasn't the right song, or the right songs to put out for me at that moment in time.

"So I did do a bit of gardening, and I grew a few carrots grew a few celeries. And then eventually I'll come back to a place where I want to make some, you know, after last year and everything, I want to make something that was very relentlessly positive."

Taking inspiration from his positive feelings, Calvin went on to explain he was keen to work with Tom Grennan due to his positive and happy vibes.

He added: "I kind of wanted to do something that felt very naturally to me. And what I enjoy doing is just upbeat, positive, happy vibes. So I had an idea of a song that was kind of sketched out. And I thought, who's the most positive kind of person that I feel like is radiating this? This like, unbelievable vibes? On my Instagram? It was Tom Grennan, you know, and he also happens to have an amazing voice. So let's get let's try get him on it."

Well, thankfully he did, and the pair's new single 'By Your Side' is out now!
