Following her training at Laine Theatre Arts, Ruthie Henshall joined the UK tour of A Chorus Line, playing Maggie. After making her West End debut in Cats, she joined the cast of Miss Saigon as Ellen.

In 1991 she created the role of Aphra in Children of Eden. She then took over as Fantine in the West End production of Les Misérables at the Palace Theatre. Her appearance in Crazy For You (nominated for an Olivier Award) at the Prince Edward Theatre established her as one of the most popular stars in the West End. Later roles included Nancy in Oliver! (London Palladium), She Loves Me (Savoy Theatre; her first Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical) and Roxie in Chicago (voted the Most Popular Musical Actress of the past 25 years by Theatregoers).

Appearances in New York included Ziegfeld Follies of 1936, the plays The Vagina Monologues and The Other Woman. After three years in New York, she returned to London to star in Peggy Sue Got Married and from 2014-2016. Ruthie played the role of Mrs Wilkinson in the West End production of Billy Elliot. She created the title role in Marguerite and was Elvira in Blithe Spirit. Ruthie also returned to Chicago as Mama Morton, making her the only actress to have played all three leading roles in the show.

Recordings include The Ruthie Henshall Album. Her book So You Want To Be In Musicals was published in 2012; in 2013 she toured the UK with her show An Intimate Evening with Ruthie Henshall.

In concert, Ruthie has successfully performed on an international scale. Having visited the USA,Australia and recently Japan. In the UK she has made multiple appearances at the Royal Albert Hall since 2017 and shall be returning in May 2019 as part of the Magic at the Musicals line-up. She has also performed alongside Alfie Boe and Katherine Jenkins on board the Bravo Cruise of Performing Arts and appeared at BBC Proms in the Park.
