Actor Sir John Hurt has died aged 77

The Harry Potter and Elephant man actor has sadly passed away

English actor Sir John Hurt has sadly passed away at the age of 77.

Amassing an impressive career spanning six decades, he starred as John Merrick in The Elephant Man, in the famous 'chestbuster' scene in science-fiction film Alien and also starred in Harry Potter as wand maker Mr Ollivander.

As well as being knighted in 2015 for his services to drama, Hurt also won a series of awards including a Golden Globe Award and four BAFTA Awards. His fourth BAFTA Awards was the Lifetime Achievement recognition for outstanding contribution to British cinema. He also received two Academy Award nominations and was knighted in 2015 for his services to drama.

He announced in June 2015 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his fourth wife Anwen Rees-Myers and sons Alexander and Nicholas.
