Denzel Washington thinks actors give their best performances when they lose at award shows.
The two-time Academy Award winner has received his seventh and eighth nominations - one for Best Actor and the other for Best Picture - for his new film Fences.
He directed and starred in the adaption of the Broadway play, which also stars Viola Davis.
She is hotly tipped to pick up the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, having already won the Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA and Golden Globe for her performance.
It is not the first time the pair have played the characters, having both starred together in a Broadway production. Denzel even admits watching Viola during rehearsals made him up his game.
After the production in New York and the movie, Denzel now wants to move away from Fences, saying he has no plans to bring it to the West End: "I don't want anything to do with it right now!"
