7 times David Bowie broke the boundaries

He was never one to conform to expectations!

There is no denying the catchiness of Bowie's tunes: Under Pressure, Let's Dance and Changes never fail to make us get up and boogie. But our favourite thing about the Starman is the way he loved to surprise us...

Labyrinth

We just have to start with this weird and wonderful musical fantasy film. In a fantasy world of a maze, Bowie plays Jareth, the Goblin King, who has kidnapped Sarah's little brother. Sarah is played by Jennifer Connelly, but our eyes are absolutely glued on Bowie throughout. From his spectacular blonde wig to his semi-flirtatious relationship with Sarah, Bowie is captivating!

Very catchy tune as well!

Under Pressure, feat. Freddie Mercury

When two icons get together, magic happens.

Enough said!

The swimming pool exorcism

Around 1960, David Bowie moved house, only to discover 'Satan' living in his swimming pool. So naturally, he performed an exorcism!

As you do.

'Changes' lyrics in The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club was always going to be a cult film, but these lyrics add another level of emotion. Bowie created lyrics that perfectly described the children characters and their relationships with their parents.

His kiss with 'Iggy' in Velvet Goldmine

Velvet Goldmine was a fan fiction film about Bowie and Iggy Pop. It featured the icons kissing in front of a crowd of reporters!

It may not have ACTUALLY happened in real life, but this moment definitely broke a lot of social boundaries at the time.

His guest appearance on the 'Zoolander' walk-off

Who could forget Bowie's appearance as a judge in Zoolander – so silly, but so memorable.

Ben Stiller still describes the scene as a 'highlight' of his career. As he should!

And last but certainly not least:

The creation of Ziggy Stardust

Bowie's flamboyant alter-ego was all theatricality and sex appeal. The orange hair, the golden moon and lightning bolt make-up, the sassy outfits...

Like Bowie himself, Ziggy could only be described as fabulous and totally lovable.
