The singer and ex-Spice Girl came to Magic Chilled for a week to choose her favourite songs and inspirations for her new album.

These are the songs Melanie chose, and why they are important to her.

1. Chandelier – Sia

Chandelier was taken from Sia's sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear (2014). The single reached the Top 5 in 20 countries.

Melanie's reason: "She has an incredible back catalogue, but I feel this is the song the really catapulted her to the international fame that she really deserves"

2. Like A Star – Corinne Bailey Rae

This was the singer-songwriter's debut single from her self-titled album Corinne Bailey Rae (2006). It was nominated for the 2008 Grammy Award for Song of the Year.

Melanie's reason: "It's one I always listen to before going onstage"

3. Wires – Athlete

Wires was taken from Athlete's second studio album, Tourist (2005). It peaked at No.4 in the UK.

Melanie's reason: "This is a tough one to listen to – the lyrics are so heartfelt, but it's a beautiful song"

4. Teardrop – Massive Attack

This was released as a single in 1998 as the second single from Massive Attack's third album, Mezzanine.

Melanie's reason: "I absolutely love their sound, their lush, atmospheric use of strings and interesting sounds. My title track, Version Of Me, is very much inspired by these guys"

5. Pure Shores – All Saints

This was released in 1999 as the lead single from the band's second studio album Saints & Sinners. The song stayed at No.1 in the UK for two weeks.

Melanie's reason: "It's great to see the girls back on the road, back with a fantastic new album"

6. King – Years & Years

This was taken from their debut studio album Communion (2015), and was the band's first No.1 single.

Melanie's reason: "I love this band! Ollie, the lead singer, is incredible"

7. One Day Like This – Elbow

This was the second single from the band's fourth studio album The Seldom Seen Kid (2008). It won the Ivor Novello award for Best Song in 2009.

Melanie's reason: "I've been a fan of this band for a very long time, and it was fantastic to see this album go huge. Seldom Seen Kid really brought Elbow to the masses"

8. Cry Me A River – Justin Timberlake

This was recorded for JT's debut studio album, Justified (2002). It won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2004.

Melanie's reason: "It's a great break-up anthem, and – fun fact – it had the same video director as my song, Never Be The Same Again!"

9. Destiny – Zero 7

This was a single from the band's album Simple Things, which debuted at No.30 in the UK.

Melanie's reason: "When I started work on my new album, I knew I wanted to do something a little bit different. So I thought about the artists and albums that I go back to time and time again. This was definitely one of the first inspirations for my new album"

10. Sour Times – Portishead

Melanie's final choice, Sour Times, was released as the second single from Portishead's debut album Dummy (1994).

Melanie's reason: "This is an incredible band from way back in the 90s, you remember the whole trip-hop era. They were another inspiration for my new album"
