Prince Philip is 'in good spirits' after admission to hospital following infection

"He is up and about and is in good spirits."

Prince Philip is on the mend according to Buckingham Palace, after he was sent to hospital with an infection.

The Duke of Edinburgh had developed an infection from a pre-existing condition, following his appearance at Royal Ascot. He therefore had to pull out of his appearance at the State Opening of Parliament, leaving the Queen to attend the event without him.

However, reports are now saying that the Duke is out of bed today, and is in good spirits.

A spokesman from the palace said: "The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition.

"Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot. The Prince of Wales will accompany The Queen to the State Opening.

"Her Majesty is being kept informed and will attend Royal Ascot as planned this afternoon."

Prince Charles made a last-minute appearance to accompany the Queen to the State Opening of Parliament, to fill in for his father.

The Duke of Edinburgh appeared at Trooping the Colour on Saturday, to celebrate the Queen's 'official' 91st birthday. He seemed in good health and spirits, despite news of his retirement being announced recently.

Get well soon, Prince Philip!
