MasterChef returned to our screens earlier and we were already excited for the 13th series of the famous cooking competition.

And then we discovered that one of the contestants was from the North of Scotland!

31-year-old Lewis from Inverness is a web developer and is training to be a pilot in his spare time. And, of course, he can now add "MasterChef contestant" to that already impressive CV.

On with the cooking! First up: the invention test.

The usual set has been expanded this year to include the homely new MasterChef market.

On the market: MasterChef has a snazzy new pantry for 2017 (BBC/Shine TV)

Fully stocked with loads of fresh ingredients, including pork, chicken, pancetta, halibut and mussels, the contestants have to choose their ingredients wisely and create a dish to impress Gregg Wallace and John Torode.

Our man Lewis made potato gnocchi served in a gorgonzola and bacon sauce with a mushroom jelly and wilted spinach, which attracted praise from Greg: "I like the ambition, I like the creativity. I'd like to see Lewis cook again".

So far so good.

If the invention test wasn't tough enough, the next task is even more daunting: cooking a two-course meal that will impress former MasterChef winners and finalists.

Despite some slightly perplexed expressions from the judges, Lewis got off to an okay start with his main course of sous-vide steak, potato cubes, celeriac puree and mushroom sauce.

But it was Lewis' dessert that caused the biggest stir of the evening when he served up custard filling inside ravioli with an apple coulis and scattered nuts.

The judges weren't impressed and neither were these people on Twitter...

That face says it all. As Lewis was sent home from the competition our dreams of a North of Scotland winner in MasterChef 2017 are over. I suppose there's always hope for next week.
