Heavy rain and flooding has closed a major Ross-shire road.

Part of the A832 between Gorstan and Achnasheen has been washed away by torrential downpours which passed over the area early on Friday evening.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told MFR News: "Due to heavy rain in the area there is currently a full road closure on the A832 between Achnasheen and Gorstan.

"The weather has resulted in significant flooding to the road and a portion of the road being washed away.

"The public are requested to avoid the area."

The stretch of road, just west of Garve, is a popular route with tourists as it forms part of the North Coast 500 and is one of only a few roads in the area. The 15 mile closure means that the diversion is more than 90 miles via Gairloch and the A835.

And it's not just the roads in the area that are affected. Trains are unable to run between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh because flooding has damaged the track at Garve.

ScotRail said in a Tweet: "Flooding is above track level and has caused some damage. Roads in area are closed too so we can't operate buses".

MFR understands that as a result of the heavy rainfall, debris and rising water have washed some of the sleepers away.
