Plans to redevelop part of Inverness's Victorian market have been approved by the Highland Council

The £1.5 million business plan will see the Market Hall transformed, but current traders will be relocated while this takes place.

Subject to recommendation, members of the Council's Inverness Area Committee also agreed to offer 12 months of free rent to returning traders.

Traders have previously voiced their concerns about the plan saying it will leave them out of business.

The plan aims to "open up the market" to accommodate live performances and other events.

Stuart Black, Executive Chief Officer Transformation and Economy said the plans will help hundreds of local businesses.

He said: “The overall aim of the Business Plan is to create a viable future for an asset that is currently a financial drain on the Inverness Common Good Fund and to increase footfall in the city centre to the benefit of the 800 businesses located there."
